Last week as Owen was playing I over heard him saying something about an "owner". I dismissed it because he quite often says random things to himself during play time. Usually it's conversations with himself back and forth, which are pretty comical. Anyways...Later that day we were in the car and he was playing with his G.I. Joe and kept saying "Owner Mama! His Owner!" and I was so confused. I said "Who's Owner? What do you mean?" After a few minutes of navigating through the Mama to 2yr old language barrier and Owen pointing at Joe's foot I realized he's talking about Toy Story! He is wondering who the "Owner" of G.I. Joe is. This kid is too much... his brain wheels must constantly be turning! Since then he has been talking non stop about owners and "where is his owner mama?" and looking at all of his toys feet. Then I caught him contorting himself to check out his OWN foot to see where HIS owner was! I asked him what he was doing and he said in a very concerned tone "Who's my owner Mama?" seeing nothing was on his foot. Well....yes this is all very silly that my son thinks that every person has an 'owner' and is wondering who his 'owner' is. But I took that opportunity to give a little lesson. I said "Owen - who made you?" and of course he quickly replied "God!" I said "That's right! God created us in his image and we belong to Him. God gave you to Mama and Daddy to take care of and teach, but you are God's little Owen! He loves you and you must obey Him and Mama and Daddy like he tells us in the Bible." He soaked it all up and was very excited that he had an owner and that it was God! Of course what came next was writing his owner on his foot, which he was very excited for us to do! The rest of the day he went around telling everyone that he had an owner and most would ask "Who is your owner?" and he would reply with glee "God!!" Who knew a Bible lesson could come from Toy Story huh?
Owen's first traumatizing experience (that I know of) happened last weekend. He and my mom were taking a walk around her neighborhood and it started to get cold so he asked her to be picked up. 30 seconds after that a pit bull came flying out into the alley they were walking in and jumped up and bit my mom on the thigh. She started screaming for help and yelling so the dog would run away (and thankfully it did!) but poor Owen was just silent and in shock. My mom said that as she hobbled back to the house he didn't make a peep and just laid his head down on her shoulder. God was so merciful that in his providence Owen asked to be picked up, otherwise the dog very well could have bit Owen's face or even dragged him away. Later that night he was giving us his account of what happened. "Grama has owies. The dog is naughty and bite her. Grama has a pit bull". The good news is that he doesn't seem to be afraid of dogs after the fact, he interacted with one normally that very day. My mom got some anti-biotics and the bite is healing, she's just thankful it was her not him!!
He has gotten down the first three commandments, after much confusion which can be blamed on me. First I was teaching 2 and 3 out of order, then I was informed that the way I was phrasing #2 wasn't really correct... so I think we've finally gotten it all straightened out. The videos I tried to take of him were not successful because he either 1) wouldn't sit still long enough to answer all the questions 2) had his finger up his nose for half of the video or 3) just kept saying "cheeeeese" at the camera. I will get it on video soon. Another thing I need to get on video is Owen's Spanish. He knows: how to count to 10, Friend, Moon, Hello, Goodbye, Water, Bee, Butterfly, Shoes, Soap, "Where is it?", and a few more I'm forgetting.
In other news Owen told his first joke at work last week, well he thought it was a joke and we just laughed at his attempt to make a joke, not so much about the joke itself. Arden and I were discussing something or other and Owen said "What does the door say?" and we're both thinking....okayyyy "I don't know, what does the door say Owen?" and he said "DOOR! hahahahahah" and laughed like his 'joke' was sooo funny. We laughed and he ran off to the next thing. As Sam says, despite how hard his family tries to make jokes, his uncle got ALL the humor in the Renihan family, so here's hoping Owen gets his humor from the Winton side ;-) HaHa!
Here is a video of him 'reading' on of his favorite books Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. I'll translate the first page he is reading for you "I went to bed with gum in my mouth, and now there's gum in my hair and when I got out of bed this morning I tripped on the skateboard and by mistake I dropped my sweater in the sink while the water was running and I could tell it was going to be a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day." (Is it sad that I didn't even have to check the book for accuracy? That's how MANY times we have read this book.....)
Needless to say ....Owen's favorite book of the week : Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day (again)

I just love the Toy Story lesson. It's so neat how he can actually understand concepts like that.
ReplyDeleteAnd nice joke, Owen :p
